Index:
     A = Player's score.
     B = Number of rated opponents played (N).
     C = Score against rated opponents (W).
     D = Average rating of rated opponents (Rc). Not shown for unrated players if B is less than 3.
     E = Rated players:   Sum of expected score for each rated opponent (We).
         Unrated players: '--' if player scored more than 50%.
     F = Rated players:   Actual score less expected score. This must be multiplied by K to get change of rating.
         Unrated players: FIDE Performance rating.
     K = 25 for up to 30 FIDE rated games, K = 15 until rating reaches 2400, then K = 10.

We returned to the 2008 venue – Glamorgan University in Trefforest. Conditions for playing, staying and eating were as good as last year although, if anything, the weather was worse. As a “Gog” I can say that I have found somewhere to rival Blaneau Ffestiniog!  We have already booked the venue for 10th – 15th July 2010. A total of 48 players took part, up on last year, although only 6 of these were titled players none of whom were FMs so title norms were very hard to achieve. The first two rounds were accelerated and by the end of round three IM Petr Marushenko was sole leader on three. However, defeat by GM Julian Radulski saw the latter take the lead, a position he never relinquished and he went in to the last round a full point ahead of his fellow gms Keith Arkell and Normunds Miezis and IM Marijan Petrov. Sadly the lack of fms and 2200+ players had already ensured that this would be the first year that no title norms would be gained. The final round saw Radulski floating down to play Fletcher, Miezis playing Petrov and Arkell floating down to play Jackson. Marusenko and Zhou (both on 4½) played on board 4. Wins for Radulski and Arkell saw them finish first and second respectively whilst a draw between Petrov and Miezis and a win for Marusenko saw them share third place. Tom Brown, John Fletcher, Gareth Harley-Yeo, Peter Richmond and Joseph Turner shared the Welsh Prize. Kevin Evans got the unrated prize and gained a very good part rating whilst James won the Welsh Junior prize. Again many of the Welsh players improved their ratings and Alex Wills got a part rating. Many of the players have already paid for next year so, if you haven’t, do try to get along and take part in a really sociable tournament.

As last year everyone at the University cooperated fully and the catering was up to its usual high standard. The event ran smoothly thanks to those who give their time up to organize the event, ensure play goes smoothly, look after our websites and sort out refreshments. It remains a really friendly but hard fought event. Long may this continue.
